The Truth About Liver Detox, Diet & Hormone Balance

Struggling with fatigue, hormonal imbalance or feeling “toxic”? Here’s how to support your body’s detox pathways — properly.

After learning about everyday hormone disruptors, the next logical question is:

How do I detox”?

Let’s clear something up first…

Your body is already designed to detox.

The goal isn’t extreme juice cleanses or starvation diets.
It’s supporting your natural detoxification pathways — especially your liver.

What Does “Detox” Actually Mean?

Detoxification is a biochemical process, not a fad.

Your body (mainly your liver) works continuously to:

  • Break down toxins

  • Process hormones like oestrogen

  • Convert harmful compounds into forms you can eliminate

This happens in two key stages: Phase 1 and Phase 2 detoxification

Phase 1 vs Phase 2 Detoxification (Why Balance Matters)

Phase 1 Detox (Activation Phase)

Your liver uses enzymes (mainly cytochrome P450) to:

  • Break down toxins

  • Convert them into intermediate compounds

These intermediates can actually be more reactive and potentially harmful if not processed properly.

Phase 2 Detox (Conjugation Phase)

This is where the body:

  • Neutralises those intermediates

  • Makes them water-soluble

  • Prepares them for elimination (via stool/urine)

The Problem: When Phase 1 Outpaces Phase 2

This is something I see clinically a lot.

If Phase 1 is fast, but Phase 2 is sluggish:

  • Toxins aren’t cleared efficiently

  • Reactive compounds build up

  • Symptoms worsen

This can contribute to:

  • Hormone imbalance (especially oestrogen dominance)

  • Fatigue

  • Headaches

  • Skin issues

  • Chemical sensitivity

Signs Your Detox Pathways May Need Support

  • You feel worse after alcohol or processed food

  • Sensitivity to smells, perfumes or chemicals

  • Hormonal symptoms (PMS, heavy periods, mood swings)

  • Brain fog or fatigue

  • Skin flare-ups

How to Support Detox Naturally (Without Extreme Diets)

This is where real, sustainable change happens.

1. Eat More Sulphur-Rich Foods (CRITICAL for Phase 2 Detox)

Sulphur is essential for glutathione production — your body’s master antioxidant and detoxifier.

Top sulphur foods:

  • Broccoli

  • Cauliflower

  • Kale

  • Brussels sprouts

  • Garlic

  • Onions

  • Eggs

These directly support Phase 2 detoxification pathways

2. Increase Fibre (Your Detox Exit Route)

You can detox perfectly…
…but if you’re not eliminating properly, toxins get reabsorbed.

Fibre helps:

  • Bind toxins

  • Support gut bacteria

  • Promote regular bowel movements

Aim for:

  • 25–35g fibre per day

  • Variety of plant foods (“plant diversity”)

3. Support Your Gut (The Overlooked Detox Organ)

Your gut plays a huge role in:

  • Eliminating toxins

  • Regulating oestrogen (via the estrobolome)

  • Reducing inflammation

If gut function is off, detox suffers.

4. Stay Hydrated (Simple but Powerful)

Water is essential for:

  • Kidney detoxification

  • Lymphatic flow

  • Waste elimination

Aim for consistent hydration throughout the day — not just all at once.

5. Reduce Incoming Toxins

Before adding supplements…

Reduce the load first.

  • Swap plastics for glass

  • Avoid heating food in plastic

  • Choose fragrance-free products

Key Nutrients That Support Detox Pathways

This is where targeted support can make a real difference.

Glutathione (The Master Antioxidant)

  • Central to Phase 2 detox

  • Supports liver function

  • Helps neutralise toxins

N-Acetyl Cysteine (NAC)

  • Precursor to glutathione

  • Supports liver detox and antioxidant capacity

B Vitamins (Especially B6, B12, Folate)

  • Essential for methylation pathways

  • Support energy + detox processes

Magnesium

  • Supports enzyme activity

  • Helps with stress, sleep and detox pathways

Vitamin C

  • Antioxidant support

  • Helps regenerate glutathione

These are often most effective when tailored to your individual needs.

Why “One-Size Detox Plans” Don’t Work

Here’s the truth

Not everyone detoxes the same way. Some people:

  • Overactive Phase 1

  • Sluggish Phase 2

  • Poor gut clearance

  • Nutrient deficiencies

Which is why generic detox plans often fail.

This Is Where Testing Changes Everything

Instead of guessing, we can assess:

  • Inflammation markers

  • Nutrient status

  • Liver-related biomarkers

  • Hormone balance
