CATEGORY: BREAKFAST | SERVES: 1 | PREP: 5 MINS | SET: OVERNIGHT
A Grab-and-Go Breakfast That Actually Works
Busy mornings and sensitive digestion do not have to mean skipping breakfast or reaching for something convenient but nutritionally empty. These overnight oats combine gently spiced apple, juicy blackberries and creamy gluten-free oats in one jar you can prepare the night before and grab on your way out. Cosy, satisfying and genuinely nourishing, with no cooking, no sugar crash and no compromise on flavour.
Ingredients
Base
50g gluten-free rolled oats
200ml unsweetened almond, oat or coconut milk
2 tbsp dairy-free coconut yoghurt (optional, for extra creaminess)
Spiced fruit layer
½ apple, grated or finely chopped, skin on
60g blackberries, fresh or frozen
½ tsp ground cinnamon
Pinch of nutmeg (optional)
Splash of water
Optional protein boost
1 scoop vanilla plant protein powder (Form Nutrition works well here)
Toppings
1 tbsp chopped walnuts
Mixed seeds (optional)
Drizzle of honey or maple syrup (optional)
Method
In a jar or bowl, combine the oats, plant milk, yoghurt if using and protein powder if using. Stir until smooth.
Top with the spiced apple, blackberries, cinnamon and nutmeg. If using frozen blackberries, swirl a little of the juice through the oat mixture for extra flavour and colour.
Cover and refrigerate for at least 4 hours or overnight.
In the morning, top with walnuts and seeds. Eat cold or gently warm through if preferred.
Why It Works
Gluten-free oats contain beta-glucan fibre that supports digestion, helps balance cholesterol and provides slow-release energy to sustain focus through the morning. Apple and blackberries deliver polyphenols that feed beneficial gut bacteria, along with natural sweetness and immune-supporting antioxidants. Walnuts add omega-3 fats that support brain function, hormone balance and lasting satiety. Adding a scoop of plant protein transforms this into a complete breakfast that significantly reduces mid-morning cravings and supports metabolism throughout the day.
Soaked oats combined with protein and fibre slow digestion, stabilise blood glucose and support better energy consistency, making this one of the most effective and effortless habit changes clients can make.
Easy Variations
For extra creaminess, stir in a tablespoon of almond butter. For lower sugar, leave off the honey or maple drizzle. For higher fibre, add a teaspoon of chia seeds or ground flaxseed to the base. For a nut-free version, swap walnuts for pumpkin seeds. For a warmer spice profile, add a pinch of ginger or cardamom alongside the cinnamon.
FIT Tip
Make two or three jars on a Sunday evening and keep them in the fridge for up to three days. It takes around five minutes and means you have a genuinely nourishing breakfast ready for the week ahead without any morning effort. Consistent breakfasts are one of the most impactful changes clients make when working on gut health and energy balance.
